It’s going to be a cool one across Newfoundland tonight. Many areas will see lows near the freezing mark, a little above or a little below, with fairly light winds. Wednesday will be quite a bit cooler than today, too, as northerly winds bring some cooler air our way.

Tonight and Wednesday

Rain stays southeast of Newfoundland tonight, and skies become clearer by tomorrow morning. Through the day Wednesday, more of the Island will see sunshine by the afternoon than at the start of the day, although some areas may be slow to clear out. Highs will only be 6 to about 10 on the Island.

In Labrador, temperatures fall to -2 to -3 tonight under partly cloudy to mostly clear skies. Highs on Wednesday are near 6 to 8, with sunshine in the east and south, and more cloud in the north and west.

Watching a nor’easter for Friday and Saturday

While we’re watching the cloud cover in Labrador, I’m also watching some rain showers to our south. They’re tied to an area of low pressure, arguably a nor’easter, spinning well off the eastern seaboard of the United States. You can see the swirl on the satellite.

So, will this system affect our weather as we close out the week? The answer is definitely maybe. The low is going to sit in about the same spot for a few days before the upper-level pattern picks it up and scoots it toward the northeast, potentially near Newfoundland between later Thursday and Saturday.

As of now, it looks like the low will track southeast of Newfoundland between Friday and Saturday. If that’s the case, it would bring some rain and a bit of wind, but with a track that far offshore, major impacts look unlikely at this time. If the forecast shifts and it looks like it will track any closer, I’ll certainly have updates for you. Right now, it doesn’t look like a tremendously big system for the province, but I’m watching it closely.

The week ahead

Across the Island over the next six or seven days, highs look to be around 7 to 10, with the chance of rain increasing Thursday and Friday and lingering into Saturday. Depending on how that nor’easter tracks, there’s potential for some rain and snow in central Newfoundland on Friday, and the same goes for western areas, although the latest guidance suggests that’s less likely now than it looked earlier today. On the Northern Peninsula, temperatures will be around 3 to 7, with varying amounts of sunshine.

In Labrador, temperatures stay near or below normal for a lot of areas over the next six or seven days. They start to recover by Saturday or Sunday, especially around Goose Bay and in the west, where highs get to about 10.

Have a very good Tuesday evening! I’ll have a full forecast for you bright and early Wednesday morning, and again Wednesday evening.
