Saturday Morning’s Weather Briefing — October 31, 2026

Good Saturday Morning, and Happy Halloween!
- Happy Halloween! 🎃 It’s mild and wet on the Avalon this morning, but temperatures fall fast this afternoon, down to 2° to 4° by trick-or-treat time, with north-northwest gusts to 55 or 60 km/h.
- Rain changes to snow in central Newfoundland this morning, with 3 to 7 cm possible around Gander and over the higher terrain, and snow showers lingering into the evening.
- Rain and snow showers on the West Coast, with 3 to 7 cm of snow over the higher terrain of the Long Range Mountains.
- Windy on the Burin and along the South Coast, with north-northwest winds of 30 to 50 km/h and temperatures falling to 1° to 3° by evening.
- Labrador: dry and cold for the trick-or-treaters, with temperatures of -2° to -5° in the early evening and a few snow showers in Lab West tonight.
Two very different starts to Halloween across the Island this morning. Just after 7:30 AM, it was a mild 8° in St. John’s and Marystown, but only 3° in Gander and Corner Brook, 2° in Deer Lake and 1° in St. Anthony, with a brisk north wind making it feel like -3° in Gander and St. Anthony. In Labrador, it was -7° in Lab West, -6° in Churchill Falls, -5° in Goose Bay and -4° in Nain, where it felt like -9°.
That split tells the story of today. A weak area of low pressure is moving off to the northeast, with mild southerly winds on the Avalon for now and colder north winds already in place over central and western Newfoundland. As the low pulls away this afternoon, the wind swings around to the north-northwest in the east too, and the cold air comes rushing in.
A big drop in the east this afternoon 🌡️

On the Avalon, periods of rain continue this morning and into midday, with around 12 mm, and temperatures peak near 10° or 11° around noon. Don’t let that fool you! Once the wind shifts this afternoon, temperatures tumble: down to about 6° in St. John’s by 4:30 PM, then 4° by 6:30 PM and 3° by 8:30 PM, with north-northwest winds gusting to 55 or 60 km/h. With the wind, that will feel like -2° to -3° at trick-or-treat time, and a few showers are still possible early in the evening.
It’s a similar story on the Burin Peninsula and around Clarenville. Marystown starts near 9° or 10° this morning but falls to about 3° by late afternoon and 2° by 6:30 PM, feeling like -4°, with northwest gusts of 45 to 50 km/h. Around Clarenville and on the Bonavista Peninsula, rain mixes with snow this afternoon, with a few snow showers into the evening.
Snow in central Newfoundland ❄️

In central Newfoundland, the rain is already changing to snow this morning. Gander and the Exploits Valley see snow through the day, with 3 to 7 cm possible around Gander and more over the higher terrain, while Grand Falls-Windsor and lower areas will likely see closer to 2 cm, mainly on grassy surfaces. Temperatures hover near 1° to 2° all day, with north winds gusting to 40 or 45 km/h, so it’ll feel like -3° to -5°. Snow showers linger around Gander into the evening, so trick-or-treaters there could be out in a few flurries.
On the West Coast, rain this morning tapers to rain and snow showers this afternoon, with highs of 4° to 5° and 3 to 7 cm of snow over the higher terrain of the Long Range Mountains, including the Gros Morne highlands.
Trick-or-treat forecast 🎃

Around 6 to 8 PM, here’s what to expect:
