Our Monday, the second day of November, was certainly a cloudy one over the St. John’s metro area and for most of Newfoundland, for that matter. There were even a few scattered showers around, and as of mid-afternoon, they stretched from near the western side of Trinity Bay to about the isthmus, working their way east. Those will be out of our hair this evening. They’re along and ahead of a cold front, and that front sets the stage for cooler air moving in overnight and some chilly days on Tuesday and Wednesday across the province.

Tonight

Labrador West takes the cake for the cold tonight, with a low near -8°, and Churchill Falls isn’t far behind, at -6°. Luckily, the wind comes down, but it stays breezy overnight, so it’ll feel much colder than the air temperature.

On the Island, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor and Buchans fall to between -3° and -4°, and it’s similar for Corner Brook and St. Anthony.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday brings sunshine across the province, with temperatures between about 2° and 5° in Newfoundland and about -2° to 4° in Labrador. So it’s certainly going to be a chilly day, but sunnier than today by almost any stretch of the imagination.

There’s not much going on regionally right now, and that will be the case through Tuesday and even parts of Wednesday. What we do have is a dip in the jet stream over Newfoundland and Labrador, separating the chilly air over us for the next couple of days from warmer air to our southwest. Many areas of the Maritimes get into the teens Tuesday and potentially again Wednesday, like in Halifax and Yarmouth, while here, even under full sunshine, we struggle to reach 5° or 6° on Tuesday, and only 4° in eastern Newfoundland on Wednesday.

Our next “weather maker” is near Winnipeg this evening, and because of the pattern we’re in, it mostly misses Newfoundland and Labrador. It does bring a little snow to parts of Labrador, though. By Wednesday morning, a bit of wet snow shows up near the Labrador–Quebec border, just west of Fermont, and works its way south and east, grazing parts of Labrador West with some snow on Wednesday. By Wednesday evening, parts of southwestern Newfoundland may see a couple of hours of wet snow, or snow mixed with rain.

Looking ahead

As far as activity goes across the Island over the next few days, that’s really about it until Sunday or Monday, when there’s a chance of showers or some rain in eastern Newfoundland. It may come a little sooner on the Northern Peninsula, with some showers on the go from Friday right through Monday, and a little cooler as well. Overall, there are no major systems in play, at least for now, but that could always change.

In Labrador, it’s a fairly quiet couple of days, aside from a little snow in the west Wednesday morning. Some rain arrives Thursday, then it’s more unsettled Friday, Saturday, Sunday and potentially Monday in the west, as a couple of minor systems work their way through.

There is a weak area of low pressure out in the Atlantic, well north of the Bahamas and the Caribbean, that may turn into a subtropical low later in the week. It’s something I’m watching, but aside from that, it’s very quiet.

Have a great Monday evening! I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow morning with my next forecast update.
