Good Thursday Morning!

Newfoundland temperatures, Thursday morning, November 5
Labrador temperatures, Thursday morning, November 5

It was another cold, clear night on the Island, especially in central Newfoundland, where Badger dropped to -8.5°. It’s -4° to -6° this morning in places like Deer Lake, Grand Falls-Windsor and Clarenville, and -4° in St. John’s. Give yourself a few extra minutes on the Island this morning, as there’s frost on the car again.

Labrador is a different story: the rain arrived overnight, and temperatures are sitting at 1° to 3° from Labrador City to Goose Bay, with light rain falling in Lab West.

The low over Quebec that I talked about last night is pushing warmer air north. On the Island, the morning sunshine gives way to cloud from the west this afternoon, and southerly winds help temperatures climb to 6° to 9°, the warmest in a few days. Showers reach the southwest coast, around Port aux Basques and Burgeo, this afternoon and spread up the west coast tonight.

Thursday’s highs across Newfoundland and Labrador

In Labrador, it’s a rainy day, with about 10 to 15 mm from Lab West to Churchill Falls and 5 to 10 mm around Goose Bay and the south coast. Highs reach 6° to 8°. Tonight, the wind turns north behind the low and the rain changes to snow in Labrador City and Wabush, then in Churchill Falls by Friday morning.

Rain in Cartwright and Makkovik this afternoon, with highs near 6°, and in Nain, with a high near 4°.

Looking ahead: Friday is the day of change in Labrador. Snow falls in Lab West and Churchill Falls Friday morning, and the rain-snow line pushes east through the day, reaching Goose Bay by the evening and the southeast coast Friday night. From late tonight to early Saturday, the latest data has 5 to 10 cm for Churchill Falls, Postville, Makkovik, Rigolet, Cartwright and Port Hope Simpson, 2 to 5 cm for Labrador City, Wabush, Goose Bay, North West River, Hopedale and Mary’s Harbour, and a trace to 2 cm around L’Anse au Loup. Travel between Goose Bay and Lab West will be treacherous on Friday. The Island stays mild on Friday, with highs of 10° to 14°, cloud and a few showers, especially in the west. Saturday looks quiet, before another system may bring rain, possibly heavy, from Saturday night into Monday.
