Rain, Snow In NL’s Forecast For Friday and Halloween
This forecast is sponsored by:

Many of us across Newfoundland and Labrador saw decent weather on our Thursday, with a mix of sun and cloud across the Island and through a good part of Labrador. However, an incoming area of low pressure is dragging some snow and rain into western Labrador this late afternoon, and that will spread east overnight and into tomorrow. We’re looking at the potential for rain and snow across Newfoundland and Labrador through Friday and even into Halloween.
I’d also like to mention that the St. John’s Rotary Club has an online auction on the go right now, with some lovely items up for grabs. You can find the auction and bid here, or scan the QR code in tonight’s video.
Tonight and Friday
Tonight looks mostly dry across Newfoundland, with lows of about 3° to 6°. Late in the overnight, rain arrives on the Northern Peninsula and the West Coast, while Labrador deals with rain and snow overnight.
Showers work their way toward eastern Newfoundland on Friday. Behind the departing low, it turns cooler in Labrador, with areas of flurries and showers, and the showers mainly confined to the southeast corner of the Big Land by Friday evening.
Snow works toward Goose Bay overnight as a rain/snow mix, but I’m not expecting a whole lot of snow in the lower terrain of Labrador with this system. By Friday morning, rain and showers move across western Newfoundland, and the southwesterly flow will help bring a warmer day. That warmth is short-lived, though. A cold front scoots through, bringing more rain showers and a bit of rain to the Burin and Avalon Peninsulas Friday evening.
A tricky Halloween 🎃
Earlier this week, Halloween looked excellent. Now, not so much. An area of low pressure east of Newfoundland is going to interact with another piece of energy coming off the North American continent, and that will drive some precipitation over the Island during the day Saturday.
The rain on the Avalon lasts into early Saturday morning, then a second area of precipitation develops Saturday morning, first over the South Coast with rain and snow, with snow inland over the higher terrain, and then into central Newfoundland by midday. By Saturday lunchtime, a rain/snow line may set up somewhere around Terra Nova National Park, with a little snow falling back toward Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor.
It won’t snow for long, and we’re not looking at significant amounts, but a centimetre or two on grassy surfaces in parts of central and northeastern Newfoundland isn’t out of the realm of possibility. The good news is that it’s long gone by 8 or 9 PM. In its wake, though, it’s breezy and cold, and some areas will have a little snow on the ground.
How much snow and rain?
In Labrador, we’re not looking at a tremendously high amount of snow with this system, mainly from tonight through Friday morning. A rough 5 to 10 cm is possible around Churchill Falls. Labrador City and Wabush could see some too, but I think the heavier snow may stay just north, so 2 to 5 cm, and probably less than 2 cm, is a better bet there. I’ll be watching the radar and webcams closely, so if you have any pictures or observations of the snow from Lab West, please send them my way! If you’re travelling to Churchill Falls Friday morning from Goose Bay or Labrador City/Wabush, you may run into some wet snow.
On the Island, any snow will fall Saturday morning into the early afternoon, with a trace to less than 2 cm, and a little more over the higher terrain around Corner Brook and the Long Range Mountains. That’s about it, so no tremendously high snowfall amounts on the Island either. How many times can I say “tremendously” in one forecast?
Rainfall amounts aren’t super high either. On the Avalon, it looks like 10 to 20 mm between Friday afternoon and Saturday evening, with some higher totals farther west. Keep in mind that the model is showing total precipitation there, so in central and western areas some of that will actually fall as snow. I’d lean toward a mix of the two, and that should get clearer tomorrow.
Trick-or-treat forecast
Most of the precipitation looks to be done by 6 or 7 PM Saturday at the latest. Temperatures will be between about 1° and 3° on the Island at trick-or-treat time, with winds gusting to 60 km/h, so it’ll feel quite chilly out there. In Labrador, temperatures will be below freezing almost everywhere for Halloween. Kids, the snowsuits will go pretty well across the board, maybe not because of snow, but just to keep you nice and warm. Adults, probably you too!
The 7-day outlook
The 7-day forecast for Newfoundland shows temperatures rebounding somewhat nicely on Monday, then it’s quiet and dry Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week almost across the board. In Labrador, temperatures stay on the cool side in the west through Tuesday, then warm up Wednesday and Thursday as it looks now. It’s the same story for Goose Bay and the North Coast, pretty quiet through the next 7 days, and along the southeast coast with highs of 3° to 6°.
And don’t forget to change your clocks this weekend! At 2 AM Sunday, we fall back one hour to standard time.
I’ll see you bright and early Friday morning with a full update on what to expect tomorrow and through the Halloween weekend. Have a great Thursday evening, and stay safe!
