As we near 6:30 PM on this Monday, showers are working their way across parts of northeastern, interior central and southwestern Newfoundland. Those showers are along a cold front, and that front is going to play a big role in our weather overnight and especially on Tuesday, because behind it there is some seriously cold air.

Just look at the temperatures in Labrador right now: near 0 degrees in Churchill Falls and Labrador West, compared to 9 still in Mary’s Harbour and 7 in Blanc-Sablon. If you’re still in the teens on the Island this evening, savour it, because tomorrow evening it’s not going to feel anywhere near this warm.

A dramatic cool-down 🥶

Sometimes we get cold fronts that are big-time weather makers, and sometimes we get fronts that just pass by and bring a bit of a cool-down. This one is going to be more of a dramatic cool-down.

The front works its way across the Island overnight. Any showers will be near the Burin, Bonavista and Avalon peninsulas by about midnight, then move offshore early tomorrow morning. By 6 or 7 AM, most of those showers are done with and skies clear out. But with that comes the colder air pulling in, and that sets the stage for a big drop in temperatures throughout the day for central and eastern Newfoundland.

It’s similar to what we’ll see in parts of Labrador overnight. In Happy Valley-Goose Bay, it drops to minus 1 by tomorrow morning with a wind chill of minus 7, and temperatures hold near 1 degree tomorrow. That’s the air working its way across Newfoundland as well. It’ll be modified somewhat, so not quite that cold, but it’s going to be a lot chillier than today.

Feeling much cooler by Tuesday evening

In the St. John’s metro area, it’s 7 degrees at 6 AM tomorrow, with a few showers and a wind chill of 3. By noon it’s down to 6, with a wind chill of 1, and by evening it’s down to 3, with a wind chill of minus 2. In the east, temperatures are likely going to fall through the day.

On top of that, it’s going to be quite breezy. Wind speeds won’t be super high, but sustained winds of 30 to 40 km/h will gust between 50 and 60, and maybe 70 in spots, by tomorrow morning as the front ushers in the cool air. Through the day tomorrow, gusts of 50 to 60 continue, with some areas close to 80, and that makes it feel way cooler than the temperature.

Wind chills already 🌬️

I know it’s only late October, but we’re already talking about wind chills. By midnight, it feels like close to minus 11 in Labrador City and minus 10 in Churchill Falls. That’s the cold air doing its dirty work with the wind. By midday tomorrow, it feels like minus 3 in Corner Brook, minus 2 in Gander and Burgeo, and 3 degrees above freezing in Trepassey. By tomorrow evening, all areas are feeling an early-season chill.

Tonight’s lows are near minus 5 in Labrador West and closer to the freezing mark, near or below, on the Labrador coast. On the Island, lows on the Northern Peninsula are near or below freezing, while areas in the east stay mild overnight before falling through the day tomorrow. Tomorrow’s temperatures are only between about 2 and 8 across Newfoundland, and near or below freezing in Labrador.

The 7-day and your Halloween forecast 🎃

The 7-day forecast for Newfoundland shows temperatures of only 4 degrees on Wednesday, so staying chilly, then 8 on Thursday, and back to 11 on Friday with the chance of a few showers. It turns cooler yet heading into the weekend, but Saturday looks pretty good across the board for Halloween, all things considered.

Looking at Labrador’s forecast for the next 7 days, there’s no major weather in play right now, and Halloween looks pretty good there too, minus a few flurries and snow showers.

Dare I say our Halloween could be what I like to call a breath of fresh scare across Newfoundland and Labrador, with temperatures for the trick-or-treaters between about 0 and plus 6, and a little cooler with the wind chill.

I’ll have a forecast update for you bright and early tomorrow morning. In the meantime, have a great evening and stay safe!
