- Friday is the warm one, with highs in the low teens in the east, before a tricky Halloween forecast on Saturday.

Bundle up before you head out the door this morning! Just after 4:30 AM, it was 3° in St. John’s, 2° in Gander and St. Anthony, 4° in Bonavista, and 1° in Corner Brook and Stephenville. With the wind, it felt like -3° in St. John’s, Gander and Bonavista, and -4° in St. Anthony. In Labrador, it was -2° in Lab West and Churchill Falls, 2° in Goose Bay and Cartwright, and -1° in Nain, where a gusty northwest wind made it feel like -9°.

After yesterday’s chilly, breezy day, today is a step in the right direction. The wind eases across much of the Island, and outside of a few flurries over the Southern Avalon early this morning, we’ll see a mix of sun and cloud before clouds thicken up in central and western Newfoundland this afternoon. Highs reach 8° to 10° in the east and along the South Coast, and 5° to 7° on the West Coast and the Northern Peninsula. It’s still windy on the Connaigre Peninsula, the Fortune Bay side of the Burin and the tip of the Northern Peninsula, with west winds of 30 to 50 km/h.

Rain arrives on the West Coast and the Northern Peninsula after midnight tonight, with around 6 mm, and a few showers are possible farther east overnight. Over the higher terrain of the Long Range Mountains, a shower of rain or wet snow is possible today.

In Labrador, snow showers in Lab West become a steadier snow today, then change to rain later on as milder air moves in, and the snow spreads to Churchill Falls late today, with 3 to 7 cm possible there tonight. After a few snow showers this morning, Goose Bay sees a mix of rain and snow tonight, and snow develops along the South Coast after midnight, with 2 to 3 cm possible around Eagle River.

The snowfall forecast indicated that there will be a fine line between some snow and no snow in Labrador between today and early Friday. There is also a little bit of uncertainty in exactly where the low bringing this will track, and if it ends up a little farther south than forecast, the rain/snow line will drift south, and much of the Goose Bay to Wabush corridor would see accumulation of 3 to 7 cm between later today and early Friday morning.
Eastern Newfoundland / the Avalon: A mix of sun and cloud. Highs of 8° to 10°, with west winds 15 to 30 km/h, increasing to 25 to 40 km/h on the Western Avalon this afternoon. Radar shows a few flurries over the Southern Avalon early this morning, and they should taper off as the morning goes on. Partly cloudy this evening, then cloudy overnight with a slight chance of a shower, and lows of 5° to 6°. Partly to mostly cloudy around Clarenville and Terra Nova, with highs near 9° to 10°, and west winds 25 to 40 km/h on the Bonavista Peninsula with a high near 8°.
Central: Partly cloudy this morning in Gander, the Exploits Valley, Notre Dame Bay and Green Bay, becoming cloudy this afternoon. Highs of 8° to 9°, with west to southwest winds 15 to 30 km/h. Cloudy tonight, with a few showers possible late in Notre Dame Bay, and lows of 4° to 5°.
West Coast: Cloudy, with highs of 5° to 7°. West winds 15 to 30 km/h. Over the higher terrain of the Long Range Mountains, highs of only 1° to 3°, with a shower of rain or wet snow possible. Rain develops after midnight, with around 6 mm, and lows of 4° to 6°.
South Coast: Partly cloudy this morning on the Burin and the Connaigre Peninsula, then cloudy and windy this afternoon, with west winds 30 to 50 km/h on the Connaigre, the Fortune Bay side and the southern tip of the Burin, and 25 to 40 km/h elsewhere. Highs of 8° to 10°. A mix of sun and cloud in Burgeo and Bay d’Espoir, with highs of 9° to 10°. Cloudy tonight, with lows near 5° to 6°.
Southwest / PAB: Cloudy, with a high near 9° in Port aux Basques and west winds 25 to 40 km/h. A slight chance of a shower overnight, with a low near 6°. Winds turn south-southwest tonight but stay at 15 to 25 km/h, so no Wreckhouse concerns are expected. You can always check the Wreckhouse Wind Gauge before you travel.
GNP and the Straits: Cloudy, with highs of 4° to 6°. Windy in the Straits, with west winds 30 to 50 km/h, and 25 to 40 km/h along the Northwest Coast. Rain develops tonight, with around 6 mm, and southwest winds pick up to 30 to 50 km/h late. Lows of 2° to 5°.
Labrador / the Big Land: Snow showers in Lab West become a steadier snow today, then there may be a change to rain this afternoon, with a high near 3°. Overcast overnight, with a low near -1°. Light snow develops in Churchill Falls late today, with 3 to 7 cm possible tonight. The snow could be mixed with rain. A few snow showers this morning in Goose Bay, then some sun, with a high near 6°, and rain and snow tonight. Along the North Coast, windy this morning in Nain with northwest winds 40 to 55 km/h, then partly cloudy with a high near 2°, and cloudy in Hopedale and Makkovik with highs of 3° to 4°, with snow showers possible after midnight. Cloudy along the southeast coast, with highs of 4° to 5° and snow developing after midnight, with 2 to 3 cm possible around Eagle River and rain in the Labrador Straits. Lows of -3° to 2° tonight.
Looking ahead: Friday is the warm one, with highs near 12° in the east and rain showers moving across the Island. Then two areas of low pressure try to join up over the region on Saturday, so Halloween looks cooler and wetter, with rain showers in the east and rain mixing with wet snow in central and western Newfoundland by trick-or-treat time. The wind could be a factor in the east, with strong northerlies. Labrador looks dry but cold for the trick-or-treaters. And don’t forget, the clocks fall back one hour at 2 AM Sunday!
