Good Tuesday Morning!

What a difference a day makes! Yesterday, parts of the Island were in the teens. This morning, just after 5:30 AM, it was 7 in St. John’s and Argentia, 5 in Gander and Deer Lake, 4 in Corner Brook and Burgeo, and only 1 in St. Anthony. Over the Labrador Straits, it was already below freezing in Blanc-Sablon.

Last evening’s cold front moved across the Island overnight, bringing showers to the Burin, Bonavista and Avalon peninsulas around midnight. The last of that rain is over the Avalon this morning. At 5:35 AM, radar showed it from St. John’s and Cape Broyle down to Trepassey, with a few heavier pockets near Placentia and Branch, while the Burin Peninsula and the rest of the Island were dry. Expect up to 2 mm before skies clear to a mix of sun and cloud this afternoon. Elsewhere, it’s a mix of sun and cloud, with a few snow showers this morning around Deer Lake and flurries over the higher terrain of the Long Range Mountains, where it stays near the freezing mark all day.

Radar at 5:35 AM Tuesday showing rain across the Avalon Peninsula, from St. John’s and Cape Broyle to Trepassey, with heavier pockets near Placentia and Branch, and the rest of Newfoundland dry

Behind the front, a gusty northwest wind is ushering in the colder air. Winds of 30 to 50 km/h will gust over 65 at times along the Southwest Coast, in the Bay St. George area and on the Northern Peninsula. Overnight, the strongest gust was 58 km/h at Ferolle Point, with 53 at the St. John’s airport. With that wind, it’s going to feel well below the actual temperature today, close to or below freezing in many spots by this evening.

Eastern Newfoundland / the Avalon: Rain this morning across the Avalon, heaviest near Placentia and Branch, with up to 2 mm, then becoming partly cloudy this afternoon. Highs of 8 to 9, but temperatures may fall back a little this afternoon. West-northwest winds 25 to 40 km/h. Partly cloudy tonight, with lows near 0 to 1. A mix of sun and cloud around Clarenville and Terra Nova, with highs of 6 to 8, and windy on the Bonavista Peninsula, with northwest winds 30 to 50. Lows near minus 2 to 0 tonight.

Central: A mix of sun and cloud in Gander, the Exploits Valley and Notre Dame Bay, with a few flurries possible in Green Bay. Highs of 4 to 6, with west-northwest winds 15 to 40 km/h. Partly cloudy tonight, with lows of minus 1 to minus 3.

West Coast: A few showers this morning in Corner Brook and Gros Morne, and snow showers mainly this morning in Deer Lake, then cloudy this afternoon. Highs of 5 to 6. Windy in the Bay St. George area, with northwest winds 30 to 50 km/h, gusting over 65. Cloudy tonight, with a few flurries possible around Corner Brook and lows near minus 1 to 2.

South Coast: Light rain early on the Placentia Bay side of the Burin and a few showers near the southern tip, then a mix of sun and cloud. Windy, with west-northwest winds 30 to 50 km/h on the Burin and the Connaigre Peninsula. Highs of 6 to 8, and near 5 in Burgeo, where it gets gusty this afternoon. Partly cloudy tonight, with lows near minus 1 to 1.

Southwest / Wreckhouse: Windy with a mix of sun and cloud, and a high near 7 in Port aux Basques. Northwest winds 40 to 55 km/h, occasionally gusting over 65, and staying windy tonight, with a low near 2. Northwest winds don’t usually cause trouble at Wreckhouse, but you can always check the Wreckhouse Wind Gauge before you travel.

GNP and the Straits: Windy this morning, becoming cloudy this afternoon. West-northwest winds 30 to 50 km/h, gusting over 65. Highs of 4 to 5. Lows near minus 3 to 0 tonight.

Labrador / the Big Land: Snow showers this morning in Lab West and Churchill Falls, with highs of minus 1 to minus 2, and windy in Churchill Falls, with northwest winds 40 to 55 km/h. A few snow showers this morning in Goose Bay, with a high near 2. Windy along the North Coast, with snow showers this morning and west-northwest winds of 40 to 55 km/h, occasionally gusting over 80 in Nain and Hopedale, and less than 2 cm of snow around Postville and Makkovik. Snow showers this morning in Cartwright, and overcast to partly cloudy along the rest of the southeast coast, with highs of 1 to 3. Lows of minus 3 to minus 6 tonight.

Looking ahead: Wednesday stays chilly, with highs of only 3 to 7 across the Island and a brisk west-northwest wind. Thursday warms a bit, to around 8, then Friday brings highs near 11 and the chance of a few showers. It turns cooler again for the weekend, but Halloween on Saturday is looking pretty good for now, with temperatures for the trick-or-treaters between about 0 and plus 6 — a breath of fresh scare! In Labrador, there’s no major weather in sight, just a few flurries or snow showers at times.
