Showers and some steady light rain are moving across western and central Newfoundland and the Northern Peninsula this morning, but they clear out of the west and much of central by the afternoon, with some sun breaking through. It’s a warm one, with highs of 13° to 15° in central Newfoundland, 11° to 13° in the east and along the South Coast, and around 10° on the West Coast. Southwest winds of 25 to 40 km/h, and 30 to 50 km/h on the Avalon, the Bonavista Peninsula and the Northern Peninsula, will make it feel breezy.

In the east, showers develop this afternoon, and rain moves into the Avalon and the Burin Peninsula tonight, with around 6 to 12 mm by Saturday morning. It stays mild in the east overnight, with lows of 6° to 10°, while western and central Newfoundland cool off to 2° to 4°.

Then comes Halloween. Colder air moves in on Saturday as two areas of low pressure join up over the region. Rain continues in the east Saturday morning, with temperatures on the Avalon falling from near 10° to 2° to 4° by the afternoon, and north-northwest winds picking up to 30 to 50 km/h. In central Newfoundland, rain mixes with snow Saturday afternoon around Gander, the Exploits Valley and Green Bay, and 3 to 7 cm of snow is possible over the higher terrain of the Long Range Mountains. Most of it wraps up by early evening, but trick-or-treaters can expect a cold, breezy evening, with a few flurries around.

In Labrador, the snow tapers off this morning, with 3 to 7 cm around Cartwright and Rigolet, and less than 2 cm around Hopedale and Makkovik. It turns much colder tonight, with lows of -7° to -8° in Lab West and Churchill Falls, and Halloween looks cloudy and cold across the Big Land, with highs near 0° and a few flurries.
