Monday Morning’s Weather Briefing — October 12, 2026

Good Monday Morning and Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
A developing low and cold front will move across the Island today, bringing rain and even wet snow.
The wet snow is limited to the higher elevations of western Newfoundland this morning, but many areas of western and central Newfoundland may see rain mixed with snow later today as it ends this evening.
Temperatures drop to the single digits for most areas by evening, post cold front.
Labrador is quiet and cold behind the system and yesterday’s snowfall.
The weather improves for Tuesday.
A strong cold front with a developing area of low pressure will sweep across the Island today, and it’s going to feel like two different days. Ahead of it we’ve got rain and gusty southwest winds, then the cold air pours in behind it and the rain turns to or mixes with wet snow across the West Coast and Central this afternoon and evening. Accumulation will be limited to the higher elevations.
Temperatures this morning vary from the single digits and lower teens across the Island to near or below freezing in Labrador. In fact, many of the highway cameras in the Big Land do show snow this morning.
It will be a bit breezy today as well, and gusts could reach 70 km/h on the Avalon, the South Coast, and around Port aux Basques, and it turns gusty out of the north behind the front tonight.
Eastern Newfoundland / the Avalon: Showers this morning, then rain with strong southwest winds around midday. Highs 13 to 15, warmest in the sheltered spots away from the water. About 5 mm total, ending near midnight with gusty north winds behind it.
Central: The wettest and coldest of the Island’s eastern half. Rain, 10 to 20 mm, turns to or mixes with wet snow late in the day. Highs 8 to 9 early, falling to near 2, and tonight dips to around or just below freezing with a strong north wind. Coolest on the Northeast Coast and over the higher ground.
West Coast: Rain, a 100% chance, heavy at times, 10 to 20 mm. It changes to wet snow early this afternoon as temperatures drop from 10 or 11 toward 2. Don’t be surprised by a few centimeters of snow on the Long Range Mountains, while the lower elevations see a few flakes or stay rain. Some of the higher elevations in Corner Brook and Massey Drive may see a little bit on the grass…
South Coast: Showers and/or rain. Windy, with highs around 13 falling to about 5 behind the front. Clearing tonight.
Southwest / Wreckhouse: Windy early with gusts near 70 around Port aux Basques this morning, then rain around midday. Highs near 12 or 13.
GNP and the Straits: Rain mixing with snow, highs only about 3º, colder with the wind. Skies will be clearing tonight.
Labrador / the Big Land: A much quieter day. Lab West is cold with a 30% chance of morning snow showers and a high near 0. Central and interior Labrador is mostly dry, highs around 4. The North Coast is breezy with highs near 1.
Tuesday is the break: sunny, cooler and breezy, with highs 4 to 7 on the Island. Enjoy it, because another round of rain and wind arrives Wednesday night into Thursday, and it looks windy again on the Avalon, South Coast and Southwest corner. The timing could still shift, so I’ll keep an eye on it.
