Multiple fires cause evacuations on the Avalon today as warm and dry weather fuels the flames

By Eddie Sheerr·

Warm, dry and breezy weather fueld two new fires burning on the Avalon Peninsula today. One fire is burning near the community of Kingston (Conception Bay North), on the Bay de Verde Peninsula and the other fire is burning between Holyrood and Butterpot Provincial Park. The fire burning near CBN is the larger of two. According to the Provincial Wildfire Dashboard, it’s about 258 hectares in size. The fire burning near Holyrood is currently 20 hectares in size. Both fires are listed as ‘Out-of-Control’ with a full response of ground crews, water bombers, and helicopters.

THE TOWN OF CONCEPTION BAY SOUTH

An evacuation order is now in effect for the area from 1820 Conception Bay Highway to the western boundary of Conception Bay South.

Residents from 1375 Conception Bay Highway to 1820 Conception Bay Highway, including all roads in between, are asked to prepare to evacuate should it become necessary. Residents in the advisory zone are not required to evacuate at this time but should be prepared in case the situation changes.

Additional information will be released as necessary.

THE TOWN OF HOLYROOD

Residents in the area of Route 60 from Beaumont Place to the bridge at the entrance of Holyrood, near the Seal Cove border (including all side roads) are asked to evacuate immediately. Shelter has been set up at the Conception Bay South Arena located at 13 Mifflen Drive, CBS. Motorist are asked to avoid the area.

TOWN OF SMALL POINT-ADAM’S COVE-BLACKHEAD-BROAD COVE AND KINGSTON

An evacuation order has been issued for the towns of Small Point–Adam’s Cove–Blackhead–Broad Cove and Kingston due to extreme wildfire behaviour in the area. The wildfire is currently approximately one kilometre from the community.

As more details become available, I will share them as quickly as possible.

The Forecast

The weather over the next several days across the Province will be dominated by an unusually strong ridge of high pressure. This means we will see more sunshine, warm temperatures, dry air, and very little rainfall. While this may be welcome news for summer lovers, this pattern will serve to exacerbate the fire risk across the region. The fire danger is already listed as ‘extreme’ for many regions and I only expect that to become more widespread over the coming days.

A big driver in that will be the ridge of high pressure building in. This will peak later in the week and over the weekend, driving temperatures up to as many as 10 or 12 degrees above normal. This means we are looking at highs near 30º for many areas of the Island, outside of the South Coast and Northern Peninsula. Labrador will also see readings this warm. Again, this will only increase the fire danger across the region.

Often, when we see readings this warm, there is some humidity in the air. This will be a rare time when the humidity will be low and the temperatures will be warm. The combination of these two things, and breezy conditions, means the risk of fires will be substantial until we get some much-needed rainfall.

  1. So there’s not a third fire by Butterpot Park? So much information going out and just trying to figure out what’s real. Ty Eddie

  2. Thanks Eddie what a great App I nearly jumped out of my skin when the alert went off! The fires are very scary I must say.
