This Morning’s Sunrise Was Wicked… Now What?!

By Eddie Sheerr·

Tuesday morning started with one of those sunrises that was hard to miss.

Bright reds and oranges lit up the clouds across parts of Newfoundland, including Torbay, the Bay of Exploits and St. John’s. The reason comes down to the angle of the Sun. Near sunrise, sunlight has to travel through much more of the atmosphere before reaching us. Much of the shorter-wavelength blue light gets scattered away, leaving more of the reds and oranges behind. Dust, haze, smoke, sea salt and underlit clouds can make those colours even more vivid.

As nice as Tuesday morning looked, the weather turns a little more unsettled tonight. The old nor’easter that has been lingering south of us is now a much weaker system, but it will still pass east of Newfoundland between tonight and Wednesday. Showers are already showing up over western Newfoundland and near the Avalon, and they’ll become more widespread overnight across central and eastern parts of the Island.

Some areas could even see a period of steadier rain early Wednesday morning, especially across northeastern Newfoundland and the Avalon. If you’re heading out early, a rain jacket or umbrella may be useful. The good news is that the rain won’t last long. Most of it should be winding down by around 9 or 10 AM Wednesday, with conditions slowly improving afterward as the weak low pulls away.

Temperatures Wednesday will be fairly mild for late September. Parts of Newfoundland should reach the middle to upper teens, while Labrador will also climb into the mid and upper teens, with a few spots potentially getting close to 20°C.

Thursday looks even better. Highs should reach the upper teens to lower 20s across much of Newfoundland and Labrador, with a very nice day setting up across a large part of the province. Happy Valley-Goose Bay could reach around 21°C, which may be one of the last 20-degree days of the year there.

Friday also looks good across most of Newfoundland, although the south coast may see more cloud, fog and increasing southerly winds as moisture begins moving in ahead of the next cold front.

That front brings the next change for the weekend. Rain returns to parts of Newfoundland Saturday, along with cooler temperatures. Sunday looks similar, and the overall trend into next week is toward somewhat cooler weather.

Across Labrador, the weekend itself still looks fairly good, but there are signs of a bigger cooldown next week, along with the possibility of some rain and snow activity.

So after a wet start Wednesday morning, the forecast improves quickly. Thursday should be the standout day, with Friday looking good for many areas before the pattern begins to turn cooler and more unsettled over the weekend.
